Barefoot in Paris – Ina’s love letter to her favorite city and cuisine – was one of the first Ina cookbooks I owned and will always have a special place in my heart. French cooking is the through line in her cookbooks – the base and the core of Ina’s repertoire. After four months spent camping in France, Ina taught herself to cook by making her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking and the rest is herstory! Her love of French food is what inspired me to return to France several years ago on my own little food journey – a trip that was capped with a chance run-in with Ina and Jeffrey at a restaurant – Paris is such a magical city! In Barefoot in Paris, Ina recreates so many French classics – simplifying the difficult ones without sacrificing flavor, focusing on French country cooking, and creating foolproof recipes for all of us not classically trained at Le Cordon Bleu! From her Herbed Baked Eggs (that have become a staple at my parent’s house) to her classic Beef Bourguignon that’s done in a sixth of the time it takes to make Julia Child’s to her phenomenal desserts section – for someone without much of a sweet tooth I have so many absolute favorites such as Île Flottante, Lemon Meringue Tart, Cour à la Crème, Profiteroles and Crème Brûlée. Below are my top ten picks from the book – in no particular order:
