Jordan Marsh’s Blueberry Muffins

This summer, I’ve eagerly awaited all the arrival of the wild blueberries that Maine is known for! Maine produces about 95% of these low-bush blueberries, which are smaller, sweeter, and more concentrated in flavor than their cultivated counterparts.

After spotting them at the store last week, I snatched them up, knowing exactly what I would make: Jordan Marsh’s Blueberry Muffins!

These popular muffins were once offered at the Boston-based department store Jordan Marsh, which closed in the early ’90s – but its muffin recipe lives on!

The straightforward recipe includes an ingenious step: mashing some berries and swirling them into the batter to distribute the flavor. The muffins bake up moist and nicely browned, with a lovely sugar crust on top.

I had to gild the lily after discovering the joys of a griddled blueberry muffin during our visit to Bar Harbor. Simply slice the muffin in half and griddle it in salted butter until crisp and golden brown. Absolute heaven!
