406. Homemade Applesauce

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like I’ll have time this Fall to go apple picking upstate, but I’ve been craving all the delicious apple treats. So on my way home earlier this week, I picked up a bunch of apples from the grocery store and got to work!

I’ve never made applesauce (for some reason I thought it was harder than it actually is) so decided to try Ina’s Homemade Applesauce.

It’s a pretty straightforward recipe: you peel, core and quarter the apples, mix them with orange and lemon juice and zest. Add some brown sugar, cinnamon, and allspice,  and bake. Once you take it out of the oven, you whisk it and voila!

I’m still not a huge fan of orange juice in apple desserts –  it overpowers everything.

In the end, I wasn’t thrilled with this — it’s not the recipe, I think my apples were too tart or the orange juice was too sour. I’ve read that adding salt can help temper that, so that’s what I’m trying next.
