Barefoot Contessa Family Style is Ina’s third book, released in 2002 right around the same time her Food Network show premiered – talk about a good year!
Narrowing down my favorite recipes from this one was no small task. This is the book with one of Ina’s most famous recipes, Flag Cake, plus comfort food classics like Mac & Cheese, Lasagna with Turkey Sausage, and Chicken Stew with Biscuits, and very Ina desserts like Chocolate Mousse and Raspberry Cheesecake.
What I love most about Family Style is that it really captures Ina’s whole entertaining philosophy: generous, familiar food that makes people feel taken care of, but without turning the host into a complete wreck.
The biggest lesson I took from this book? Make a timetable for any big meal. Start with the time you want to serve dinner, then work your way backward. It sounds simple, but it has been a godsend for Thanksgiving, dinner parties, and any meal where I’ve convinced myself I can casually make seven things at once.
Three books down, and this one really feels like Ina settling into the version of Barefoot Contessa so many of us fell in love with: comforting, practical, a little luxurious, and always centered around feeding people well.

Lasagna with Turkey Sausage, page 100 (Recipe)
A classic for a reason: hearty, make-ahead, and mouthwatering. While the turkey sausage lightens it up a bit, Ina still goes all in on the dairy, and the goat cheese is the real surprise. It adds just the right amount of tang.
Chocolate Mousse, page 166 (Recipe is not online)
I like chocolate, but it’s not always my go-to dessert unless it’s light and airy, like this mousse. This is an absolute crowd-pleaser.
Parmesan Chicken, page 82 (Recipe)
Basically chicken cutlets dressed up for company: crispy, lemony, and impossible not to love with that arugula salad piled on top.
Smoked Salmon Spread, page 35 (Recipe)
The kind of wildly useful appetizer I wish I had in the fridge at all times: salty, creamy, lemony, and ready in minutes.
Flag Cake, page 156 (Recipe)
I’d be remiss if I didn’t include Ina’s iconic American flag cake. While this could easily lean style over substance, that wouldn’t be very Ina, would it? It’s just as tasty as it is beautiful.

Color me shocked: who knew I’d like slices of tomato covering my mac and cheese? This ooey-gooey masterpiece is one of my favorite ways to enjoy mac and cheese.
Sunday Rib Roast, page 76 (Recipe)
Yes, this is an expensive special-occasion dish, but it is worth every penny. A crisp, highly seasoned exterior, a medium-rare center, and a mustard-horseradish sauce that brings the perfect creamy, tangy balance.
Provençal Tomatoes, page 116 (Recipe)
One of those simple Ina sides that turns tomatoes into something warm, garlicky, herby, and dinner-party-ready.
Chicken Stew with Biscuits, page 90 (Recipe)
I’d only had classic chicken pot pie before experiencing this beauty, and let me just say: flaky biscuits for the win.
Raspberry Cheesecake, page 134 (Recipe)
Cherry cheesecake may be the classic, but give me raspberry-topped cheesecake any day. Paired with a lush, creamy filling and a graham cracker crust, this is a showstopping treat.
