1986’s Heartburn – Meryl and Jack Nicholson headline this dramedy about a mismatched couple who fall in love, marry, and start a family, only to face turmoil when Jack’s character cheats. The film is adapted from Nora Ephron’s novel, which draws inspiration from her own marriage to Carl Bernstein.
As Meryl’s character was a cookbook writer in the book and a food critic in the movie, there were plenty of pairing options to choose from! But one of the most memorable scenes involves Meryl slapping a key lime pie in Jack’s face.
Luckily for us, Nora shared the actual recipe for this Key Lime Pie!
The buttery graham cracker crust is delicious – but am I the only one who can never get a graham cracker crust to stay together?! Once the crust is in decent shape, you fill it with a mix of key lime juice, zest, egg yolks, and sweetened condensed milk before freezing. Out of the freezer you top with whipped cream and serve.
Despite the messiness, the buttery crust and the perfectly tart flavor of the filling, balanced with the creamy whipped cream, make for dessert perfection.
Don’t tell the purists, but I’ve made key lime pie with regular lime juice when I couldn’t find key limes and no one was the wiser.
