Edy Massih’s Aleppo Garlic Shrimp Cocktail

One of my favorite places in Brooklyn is Edy’s Grocer in Greenpoint – Edy has created the perfect neighborhood spot where food lovers gather for dinners, events, Lebanese-inspired dips and dishes, and, of course, to watch Oprah reruns. It’s one of the places I’ll miss most now that we no longer live in the city, but luckily Edy’s book, “Keep It Zesty,” was released last week.

While I’ll miss the community,  I can now recreate so many of my favorite dishes at home!

The first recipe I tried from the book is Aleppo Garlic Shrimp Cocktail, and it is mind-blowingly good! The shrimp are tossed in a garlic and Aleppo pepper-infused olive oil and roasted in the oven until tender and finished with a splash of lemon drizzled. While they are delicious on their own, the Spicy Tomato Jam is the real star – honestly bury me in this sauce.

While Edy gives you permission to go the store-bought route, I couldn’t agree with him more that you just can’t replicate the depth of flavor  in his tomato sauce brimming with onions and garlic. The sauce is combined with more Aleppo pepper and garlic infused olive oil and baked in the oven for 2 hours until jammy.

It’s a process, but you’ll be rewarded with a lot of tomato jam that freezes well and can be added to so many different recipes.

I can’t wait to cook more from this book! Congrats, Edy!
