Ranking these was tough because, honestly, they were all phenomenal! The only ingredients they all have in common is lemon, salt, and pepper (although garlic is involved in all but two). These rankings will probably change, but as of today:
1. Lemon Chicken with Croutons
Book: Barefoot in Paris
Episode: Barefoot in Paris
One of the first recipes I made (and the sad pictures proves it, hahaha) But the first Ina roast chicken I made is still my favorite! It’s a simple one but the bed of homemade croutons that soak up all the juice and dripping from the chicken makes it addictive. (Recipe)
2. Jeffrey’s Roast Chicken AKA Engagement Chicken
Book: How Easy Is That
Episode: CHICKEN 101
This one is similar to her Perfect Roast Chicken, but with wine added to the sauce. I mean if it’s good enough for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, it’s good enough for me. I bake this on the regular and am still waiting for the proposals… (Recipe)
3. Skillet-Roasted Lemon Chicken
Book: Cooking for Jeffrey
Episode: Cooking for Jeffrey: It Must Be Friday
This is the lemoniest of her lemon roast chickens and that’s why I love it so much. In addition to the amazing flavor, I think this one is the prettiest presentation. (Recipe)
4. Roast Chicken with Radishes
Book: Cooking for Jeffrey
Episode: Cook Like a Pro: Chicken
I love this one for introducing me to the absolute joy that is a roasted radish. DELISH! (Recipe)
5. Garlic Roasted Chicken
Book: —
Episode: Chicken All the Time
This is a new favorite because it’s a meal in a pan. It’s basically her Perfect Roast Chicken, minus the gravy and with potatoes and carrots perfectly cooked alongside the chicken (Recipe)
6. Roast Chicken with Bread & Arugula Salad
Book: Make It Ahead
Episode: Cooking for Jeffrey: Dinner Party 101
You’d think this would be higher given it contains the coveted chicken-dripping soaked bread, but it got knocked a couple spots because I’m not a big fan of chicken with bones in a salad. The simple dijon vinegarette salad is tasty but of course, the bread is the highlight. (Recipe)
7. Perfect Roast Chicken
Book: Barefoot Contessa Cookbook
Episode: The Homecoming
Now that is a beautiful bird! I do think this one came out the prettiest – minus the burnt onions! In the book, Ina suggests you can add red potatoes and carrots. And on her show, she includes carrots and fennel. (Recipe)
8. Lemon & Garlic Roast Chicken
Book: —
Episode: Chicken Story
There is not a chicken recipe on this list that I didn’t love, but one of them had to come in last … and it’s for a surprising reason: bacon. Sometimes simpler is better and unless you’re planning on making a CBLT afterword the bacon isn’t needed. (Recipe)
